About Us
History
Founded in 1890, DAR is one of the largest women’s lineage-based, patriotic non-profit organizations in the world. Since our founding, more than one million members have carried out our mission. The four women who founded DAR helped to form our lasting mission of promoting three key areas: historic preservation, education, and patriotism. As we continue to pursue our mission, we apply the values of our ancestors and build on the foundation of DAR’s founders to accomplish important work today.
The Brunswick Town Chapter, NSDAR, was organized in 1976. We adopted our name to honor the Patriots at Brunswick Town, a seat of colonial government located on the Cape Fear River southwest of Wilmington. The town was a shipping center for lumber and naval stores and grew into a major port for exporting to England. The North Carolina Assembly often met in the court house of Brunswick.
In February 1766, a large group of citizens surrounded Governor Tryon’s Brunswick Town home protesting the Stamp Act and placed the governor under house arrest. This protest was one of the first incidents of armed resistance to British authority in America. At the outbreak of the American Revolution in 1775, the citizens who were still residing in the town feared the British warships would attack and moved away from this coastal community. In 1776, Brunswick Town burned to the ground. In recent years, extensive archeological research is bringing historical artifacts to light.

Meetings
Our chapter meets in the months from January through May and September through December. A typical meeting includes social time, a guest speaker, and a business meeting. We also have special meetings featuring teas and commemorations.
We encourage anyone interested in joining DAR to attend one of our meetings to better understand the DAR organization and especially our chapter. You will learn more about our chapter by going to the What We Do webpage to read about some of the things that we do throughout the year.
